भगवान शिव ने माता पार्वती के लिए एक महल का निर्माण करने के बारे में विचार किया। इसकी जिम्मेदारी शिवजी ने भगवान विश्वकर्मा दी तब भगवान विश्वकर्मा ने सोने के महल को बना दिया। इस महल की पूजा करने के लिए भगवान शिव ने रावण का बुलाया। लेकिन रावण महल को देखकर इतना मंत्रमुग्ध हो गया कि उसने पूजा के बाद दक्षिणा के रूप में महल ही मांग लिया। भगवान शिव ने महल को रावण को सौंपकर कैलाश पर्वत चले गए।इसके अलावा भगवान विश्वकर्मा ने पांडवों के लिए इंद्रप्रस्थ नगर का निर्माण भी किया था। कौरव वंश के हस्तिनापुर और भगवान कृष्ण के द्वारका का निर्माण भी विश्वकर्मा ने ही किया था।
