सभी इंसान उस ईश्वर के नूर से ही जन्मे हैं, इसलिये कोई बड़ा छोटा नहीं है कोई आम या खास नहीं है | सब बराबर हैं|
छुटपन में ही गुरूजी में प्रखर बुद्धि के लक्षण दिखाई देने लगे थे| लड़कपन में ही ये सांसारिक विषयों से उदासीन रहने लगे| इनका पढ़ने लिखने में मन नहीं लगता था| महज 7-8 साल की उम्र में स्कूल छूट गया, क्योंकि भगवत प्राप्ति के संबंध में इनके प्रश्नों के आगे अध्यापक हार मान गए तथा वे इन्हें ससम्मान घर छोड़ आये| जिसके बाद अधिक समय वे आध्यात्मिक चिंतन और सत्संग में व्यतीत करने लगे| बचपन में कई चमत्कारिक घटनाएं घटी जिन्हें देखकर गाँव वाले इन्हें दिव्य आत्मा मानने लगे| नानकजी में सर्व प्रथम श्रद्धा रखने वाले उनके गांव के शासक राय बुलार और उनकी बहन नानकी थीं|
गुरु नानक देव जी ने भक्ति के अमृत भक्ति रस के बारे में बात की| गुरुजी भक्ति योग में पूरी तरह से विसर्जित एक भक्त थे| गुरु नानक देव जी ने कहा, “सांसारिक मामलों में इतने भी मत उलझों कि आप ईश्वर के नाम को भूल जाओ| उन्होंने सनातन मत की मूर्तिपूजा के विपरीत परमात्मा की उपासना का एक अलग मार्ग प्रसस्त किया| नानकजी ने हिंदू धर्म मे फैली कुरीतियों का सदैव विरोध किया| उनके दर्शन सूफियों जैसे थे| साथ ही उन्होंने तत्कालीन राजनीतिक, धार्मिक और सामाजिक स्थितियों पर भी नज़र डाली| संत साहित्य में नानक उन संतों की श्रेणी में हैं जिन्होंने नारी को बड़प्पन दिया है| गुरूजी के उपदेश का सार यही है कि ईश्वर एक है उसकी उपासना हिंदू तथा मुसलमान दोनों के लिये है|
गुरुजी की दस शिक्षाएं -
1 - परम पिता परमेश्वर एक हैं|
2 - सदैव एक ही ईश्वर की आराधना करो|
3 - ईश्वर सब जगह और हर प्राणी में विद्यमान हैं|
4 - ईश्वर की भक्ति करने वालों को किसी का भी भय नहीं रहता|
5 - ईमानदारी और मेहनत से पेट भरना चाहिए|
6 - बुरा कार्य करने के बारे में न सोचें और न ही किसी को सताएं|
7 – हमेशा खुश रहना चाहिए, ईश्वर से सदा अपने लिए क्षमा याचना करें|
8 - मेहनत और ईमानदारी की कमाई में से जरूरत मंद की सहायता करें|
9 - सभी को समान नज़रिए से देखें, स्त्री-पुरुष समान हैं|
10 - भोजन शरीर को जीवित रखने के लिए आवश्यक है| परंतु लोभ-लालच के लिए संग्रह करने की आदत बुरी है|
